Vardaman is a "bush" sweet potato variety that produces a compact plant without long, trailing vines. This is a great variety for growers with limited space and is very popular among our customers with container or raised bed gardens. Vardaman sweet potatoes have a golden outside, and a firm flesh that holds their texture well when frying or roasting. They also make an excellent sweet potato casserole! The firm flesh allows them to store much longer than moist varieties like Georgia Jet. Our Vardaman sweet potato plants will produce mature sweet potatoes in 110 days for northern states and 100 days for southern states. They'll mature faster in states with hot and humid summers. The plants produce beautiful purple leaves that turn green as the sweet potatoes near maturity. Sweet potato plants should be planted once soils are consistently warm in the late spring or early summer months. We recommend planting sweet potato rows on a 4" spacing with a 10-12" plant spacing along the row. If you're growing these in a raised bed, one row per raised bed would be sufficient.
